MY 1989 JEEP YJ RESTORATION JOURNEY
TASK ONE - CLEAN- UP
After getting the jeep to South Florida the first step was to clean her up a little.
Step 1 the outside...remove trash and water, I can't believe there were this many pine needles left on it after a 900 mile trip on the back of a trailer.
Step 2 was to clean out the garbage and the wasp nest out of the interior. This was followed up by ripping out all the carpet which lead to the discovery of more bugs which were eliminated without prejudice.
This is what was left...
The original thought was to clean up the seats and put covers on them for budget reasons. However when I tried to lift the seat to clean out the floor behind them, the seats were so rotted they came right off the sliders. But thanks to a very generous donation from MechaRick (Rick the mechanic) the seats were no longer an issue (more on that later)
NOTES ON THE INTERION: 7 years of nature in the floor...by far the nastiest stuff I have ever seen...and keep in mind that when I was younger I worked at a shipyard and once had to clean out the insides of a Drydock...still not as nasty as this was. The pictures don't show how nasty this was. Not to mention the fact that while I was pulling up the carpet the 7 year old puddle of water that by some miracle stayed on the sagging top for the whole 800 + mile trip decided that my back would make a perfect stop off on it's way to the ground.
Step 3..by far the most important was to find out what was salvageable mechanically. 1 Qt of Mystery Oil, new filters, a battery, and some carburetor cleaner later we were ready to move on to the fuel system which is where the real fun began.
